Ask yourself these questions when preparing a handout whether it is for the first day of school or just a plain ordinary lesson on teaching reading strategies. What is the aim of the handout? Will I grade the handout? Will I go over the handout in class or collect it? How much percentage will I give for handouts for the final grade? Is my handout well prepared? Do students have enough information to tackle the subject matter of the handout? Are the instructions crystal clear? Do I want the students to finish the handout at home or during class time?
The next step is learning to write numbers, and this is where mathematics worksheets become almost a necessity. Unless you have great handwriting, lots of spare time and a fair amount of patience, writing worksheets will help you teach this valuable skill to your child. Dot-to-dot, tracing, following the lines and other writing exercises will help your child learn how to write numbers. A good set of worksheets will include practice sheets with various methods to help your child learn to write numbers.
If you are unable to find black and white preschool worksheets that you like, you can still go for the colored ones; however, you may want to consider adjusting your printer settings. Instead of having them print off in colored ink, you may want to adjust your settings to gray scale. This will save you a considerable amount of money and printer ink, especially in the long run. Doing this can also create an additional activity for your child, as you can have them color all the pictures themselves.
The heading of the worksheet is very important. You need to check if the heading summarizes the worksheet? It ideally should summarize what the worksheet is all about. Check the basic layout of the worksheet before buying it. Is the layout cramped or well spaced? How good are the visuals on the page? Can they keep the attention of little children? What is the quality of the content on the worksheets? The text for example, should not contain long sentences. This can make it difficult for the child to read. The language should also be simple so that children can understand what is written. Other things to look for are the quality of paper used and the packaging of the worksheets.
By the time they are learning first grade math, kids should be ready to tackle things like the relationship between addition and subtraction, the concept of adding and subtracting two-digit numbers and learning to count beyond 100. Being able to compare numbers as larger, smaller or equal to each other is also important, as it provides the basis for recognizing whether or not the answer to a computation problem is the correct one. Children need to be allowed to master these and other essential math skills before being asked to move on to new ideas, but the modern classroom setting does not always allow for this. As focus on core curriculum begins to push complex ideas into lower grade levels, kids are expected to learn more at a younger age. First grade math still contains many fundamental concepts essential for understanding higher math, and therefore should not be rushed through. By letting a child try and re-try each new thing as it comes, online math games can give the extra time and practice that struggling students need to achieve success.
Children who struggle in a traditional learning environment can also get great benefit from digital learning games. Interactive platforms provide a fun way to learn without fear of failure and give rewards that are in line with what is being learned. Through games, your child can gain the confidence he or she needs to approach math concepts that once seemed impossible. This confidence helps improve school performance and can lead to more positive participation in a classroom environment. Unlike basic school curriculum, digital learning games can be designed to move at your child has pace. Many games feature levels that build upon each other, so your child does not have to sit through lessons that he or she has already mastered. Instead, each level of the game increases in difficulty depending on how well certain ideas have been grasped. This creates a custom learning environment catered to the pace your child feels comfortable with. Without the stress of worrying about being left behind or the boredom that can result from having to wait to move on, kids can work at the speed they prefer and learn in a way that is just right for them.
In my first year of teaching and for many years that followed, I spent an inordinate amount of time preparing my own first day of school handouts. I thought it was the "hook" that students needed. I thought that teacher dominated discourse represented learning. But it really wasn not. It was actually a cover up for understanding the true purpose of what a good handout actually is all about.
